I Love Camping!

Camping: Where

I have camped in various state parks throughout Florida, but my favorite is between: Colt Creek State Park- which has more natural wildlife than the average park, and in my opinion, the best handicap accomidations; or Kissimmee State Park- which is older and less accomidating, but calmer, with less snakes, more deer and no bears.

Camping: When

Ultimately the choice is yours! Though Florida's state parks are often crowded during the winter months, and often shut down during hurricane season. My favorite time to camp is December, right before Christmas , and anytime after January first when it's still cold outside. These dates ensure that I am snuggled up next to a fire, roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate on the coldest nights of the year, and you simply cannot beat the winter night sky! Though if you enjoy the heat and nice long sunsets, summer may be a better time for you. During the summer Kissimmee State Park hosts a few different summer camps for groups such as the local private schools. Colt Creek during the summer has kayaks for rent and fields of wildflowers filled with butterflies! But stay away from the tall grass, there are rattlesnakes, crocodiles and alligators!

Camping: How

Camping at any Florida State Park is easy! Simply go to floridastateparks.org and reserve your site. Florida State Parks offer a variety of sight types, ranging from 'rough' tent sites with no electricity or water hookup, to cozy cabins! I prefer tent camping in handicap accesible sites that feature a paved path to the communal bathrooms. Prices vary between site type and size, and there are a variety of dsicounts to make your trip cheaper! I recieve a disability discount of 50%! While Florida has 59 state parks that allow camping, only 36 of them offer handicap accomidations!
